Can You Wallpaper on Your Own?

Can You Wallpaper on Your Own?

Which jobs one person can genuinely manage, which need two, the techniques that make hanging alone easier, and when paying a decorator is the cheaper decision

One person can comfortably hang a feature wall, and can manage a whole room at standard ceiling height with a bit of patience. Two people are needed for ceilings, stairwells and anything over about three metres. Paste-the-wall paper is what makes solo wallpapering realistic, because you never handle a wet, heavy length.

What you can do alone

  • A feature wall at 2.4m. Yes, and it is a good first job. Half a day including preparation.
  • A whole room at standard height. Yes. Allow a full day, and do the preparation the day before.
  • A chimney breast. Yes, short lengths, and the narrow returns are easy to handle.
  • Half-height above panelling. Yes, and it is the easiest wallpapering there is.

What needs two people

  • Ceilings. Supporting a pasted length overhead while smoothing it is not a one-person task.
  • Stairwells. Long drops and working at height over stairs. Two people, and a proper platform.
  • Walls over about 3m. The length becomes unwieldy before the paste is anywhere near set.
  • Heavy-grade paper above about 2.5m. A 300gsm length is heavy enough to pull itself off the wall.
  • Sloping ceilings. Gravity again.

Cut everything first

Measure, cut and number your lengths before you open the adhesive. Cutting with paste on your hands is where mistakes happen, and stopping mid-wall to cut lets the pasted wall dry.

Use a laser level

Marking a plumb line with a spirit level means holding the level, the pencil and the ladder. A laser projects the line and leaves both hands free, and it is the single most useful thing you can borrow or buy for hanging alone.

Hang from the roll

On a full-height wall with no obstacles, offer the roll up, set the top, let it fall, then cut at the skirting. No cut length to carry, no folding.

Support the length as you set the top

Drape the lower part of the length over your forearm while both hands set the top edge, then release it down the wall. On our traditional paper this is easy; it is the heavy-grade that argues for a second person.

Work in short sections

Paste one length's width at a time. Pasting ahead means the wall skins over before you reach it.

Keep the floor clear

The most common accident hanging alone is standing on your own offcut on a ladder. Clear as you go.

Realistic timings

  • Preparation: half a day for a painted room in good order; a full weekend if there is paper to strip.
  • A feature wall: two to three hours once the wall is ready.
  • A standard room: a full day alone, most of it around the openings and corners rather than the flat runs.
  • Drying: 24 to 48 hours before furniture goes back.

Wallpapering is slow at the start and quick at the end. The first length takes twenty minutes and the fifth takes five.

Where to begin if you're nervous

Start on the wall you see least, such as behind the door, or the wall the sofa backs onto. By the time you reach the wall you look at every day, you will have hung three or four lengths and will be far better at it. That also happens to be where you want the final join, so it costs you nothing.

And order a sample first. Having lived with the design on the wall for a week, you will start the job with one fewer thing to be uncertain about.

When to hand it over

Consider a decorator for a stairwell, a ceiling, a high-ceilinged period room, or a whole house. The cost of getting a stairwell right first time is usually less than the cost of the paper you would waste getting it wrong. Nothing about that is a comment on your ability; professionals hire scaffolding for stairwells too.

Can you wallpaper by yourself?

Yes, for a feature wall or a standard-height room. Ceilings, stairwells and anything over three metres need two people.

Is wallpapering hard?

Less so than it used to be. Paste-the-wall paper removed the soaking, the pasting table and the wet, stretching length, which is where the reputation came from.

How long does it take to wallpaper a room alone?

A full day for hanging, plus preparation beforehand and 24 to 48 hours drying afterwards.

What's the hardest part?

Not the flat walls. Corners, windows and getting the first length truly plumb.

Which paper is easiest for a first-timer?

Our traditional 150gsm paste-the-wall paper. Light, forgiving, and it slides on the wet paste while you line the seam up.

Should I hire a decorator?

For a stairwell, a ceiling or a whole house, it is usually worth it. For one feature wall, do it yourself.

This wallpaper is just gorgeous! I used the one that requires glue and it was super easy to i stall. One roll was enough for a 6’ wide laundry closet with 7’5” ceilings. Even on our orange peel walls it set beautifully. I did this behind our new washer dryer set up in our laundry closet with white oak cabinets and it’s perfect! Highly recommend!

Truly love this wallpaper. Looks amazing in both our bathroom (the original project) and as an accent in the back of a cabinet (what we did with the extra). Everyone who sees it comments on how classy and beautiful it is. For these reasons five stars! However I do want to call out two concerns: 1. The online "calculator" on the site recommend nine roles, which seemed excessive for our less than 100 sq ft bathroom. I even reached out to support to double check and they said to go by the calculator. I'm glad I didn't because I ended up ordering five roles and only needing 4. I will say returning the 5th role was a pretty smooth process, so kudus to Claret and Key for that. 2. Strangely the "autumn" color with pale nutmeg background reads more green than brown in certain light. With bright overhead light it comes across as the soft brown we intended, but in natural light it reads much more green. Not anything to terrible just unexpected.

Customer photo review of Etta

Poor customer service - rolls are only available as one off 10m runs, so if you need 11m.. unfortunately you’ll be paying double for a second roll! Unless your walls are 8m or less, I’d avoid. Wrongly assumed Claret & Key would be slightly more compassionate about the situation and even help with a slightly discounted second roll, considering we only needed 1m. How wrong we were!

Etta

Store owner replied: Hi Emily, I'm sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the service. We sell our wallpaper by the roll, and we are unable to manufacture shorter rolls. This will be the same for most manufacturers as 10m rolls are standard, and most rooms require more than 1 roll to complete the job. Thanks, Claret & Key

I really loved this paper and thought it would look nice in my attic space. Delighted with the end result. Great service, excellent quality of paper and it really transforms the room. The eves are very low so the space was not utilised so making a feature with the wallpaper has created a cosy space to relax in. Thank you. M

Customer photo review of Louisa

Love this wallpaper. It’s just enough to show a statement but not so loud that it overpowers the space. Being able to pick the color is such a great thing also. You’re not stuck with 5 options so it can match your style and colors of your space. Would recommend to anyone looking for wallpaper. Very happy and my installer said its super easy to install this pattern.
