Can You Wallpaper Over Existing Wallpaper?

Can You Wallpaper Over Existing Wallpaper?

The four conditions old paper has to meet, how to test it in five minutes, and why paste moisture lifts both layers when you get it wrong

Only if the old paper is flat, smooth, non-vinyl and firmly stuck down everywhere. If it fails any one of those four, take it off. The moisture in fresh paste soaks through and reactivates the old adhesive, and both layers come away together, usually two or three days after you have finished.

The honest answer is that stripping is nearly always the better decision. But there are walls where papering over is genuinely fine, and this is how to tell which one you have.

The four conditions

  1. Flat. No embossing, no relief, no woodchip, no texture of any kind.
  2. Smooth. No lifted seams, no bubbles, no patched repairs standing proud.
  3. Non-vinyl. Paste will not bond to a vinyl or coated surface.
  4. Firmly stuck. Everywhere, not just in the middle of the wall.

How to test it

  1. Lift a corner at the skirting with a filling knife and pull gently upwards. If it starts to come, it will keep coming.
  2. Run a thumbnail along a seam. Any seam that lifts, anywhere in the room, means the whole wall is suspect.
  3. Press your palm across the wall. Hollow-sounding areas are already lifting behind the surface.
  4. Check for vinyl. Dab a damp cloth on an offcut area. Paper darkens as it absorbs; vinyl beads the water and stays dry.
  5. Do this on every wall. Rooms are often papered at different times, and the wall behind a wardrobe is rarely the same age as the rest.

Take it off if

  • It is vinyl or coated
  • It is textured, embossed or woodchip
  • It is dark or strongly patterned, and your new design is pale, so the old pattern will shadow through
  • It is lifting, bubbled or peeling anywhere at all
  • It is more than one layer thick
  • It has been painted over
  • It is in a kitchen or bathroom, where the old adhesive has been through years of steam

Why it fails when it fails

New paste puts water onto the back of the old paper. Old wallpaper adhesive is water-soluble, so it softens, and the weight of a freshly pasted length pulling on a softened bond is enough to let go. The failure is rarely immediate. It happens as the wall dries, which is why people find bubbles and lifting a few days after finishing rather than on the day.

The other failure is slower and more annoying: any texture, seam or patch in the old paper telegraphs through the new one within a week as it dries and shrinks onto the surface.

If you are going to paper over it

  1. Wash the old paper down with a barely damp cloth and let it dry completely. Do not soak it. You are cleaning it, not stripping it.
  2. Cut out and re-stick any lifted seams with a fine brush and a little adhesive, then let them dry fully.
  3. Fill and sand any damage, feathering the repair so it does not stand proud.
  4. Offset your new seams so they do not fall directly over the old ones. Two seams stacked on top of each other is where a ridge shows.
  5. Work quickly and use no more paste than you need, so less water goes through to the layer below.

What this does to the next person

Worth saying plainly: papering over paper makes the next removal harder, because two layers have to come off and the top one shields the bottom one from water. If you are staying, that is your problem to inherit. If you are preparing to sell, strip it.

Can you wallpaper over wallpaper?

Only where the existing paper is flat, smooth, non-vinyl and firmly stuck throughout. Otherwise it should be removed.

Can you wallpaper over vinyl wallpaper?

No. Paste will not bond to a vinyl or coated surface.

Can you wallpaper over woodchip?

No. The texture reads straight through the new paper.

How do I know if my wallpaper is vinyl?

Dab it with a damp cloth. Paper absorbs and darkens; vinyl beads the water.

Will the old pattern show through?

If it is dark or strongly patterned and your new design is pale, yes.

Is it ever worth papering over rather than stripping?

On a flat, non-vinyl single layer in good condition, yes, because it saves a day of wet work. In every other case, stripping is the better decision.

This wallpaper is just gorgeous! I used the one that requires glue and it was super easy to i stall. One roll was enough for a 6’ wide laundry closet with 7’5” ceilings. Even on our orange peel walls it set beautifully. I did this behind our new washer dryer set up in our laundry closet with white oak cabinets and it’s perfect! Highly recommend!

Truly love this wallpaper. Looks amazing in both our bathroom (the original project) and as an accent in the back of a cabinet (what we did with the extra). Everyone who sees it comments on how classy and beautiful it is. For these reasons five stars! However I do want to call out two concerns: 1. The online "calculator" on the site recommend nine roles, which seemed excessive for our less than 100 sq ft bathroom. I even reached out to support to double check and they said to go by the calculator. I'm glad I didn't because I ended up ordering five roles and only needing 4. I will say returning the 5th role was a pretty smooth process, so kudus to Claret and Key for that. 2. Strangely the "autumn" color with pale nutmeg background reads more green than brown in certain light. With bright overhead light it comes across as the soft brown we intended, but in natural light it reads much more green. Not anything to terrible just unexpected.

Customer photo review of Etta

Poor customer service - rolls are only available as one off 10m runs, so if you need 11m.. unfortunately you’ll be paying double for a second roll! Unless your walls are 8m or less, I’d avoid. Wrongly assumed Claret & Key would be slightly more compassionate about the situation and even help with a slightly discounted second roll, considering we only needed 1m. How wrong we were!

Etta

Store owner replied: Hi Emily, I'm sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the service. We sell our wallpaper by the roll, and we are unable to manufacture shorter rolls. This will be the same for most manufacturers as 10m rolls are standard, and most rooms require more than 1 roll to complete the job. Thanks, Claret & Key

I really loved this paper and thought it would look nice in my attic space. Delighted with the end result. Great service, excellent quality of paper and it really transforms the room. The eves are very low so the space was not utilised so making a feature with the wallpaper has created a cosy space to relax in. Thank you. M

Customer photo review of Louisa

Love this wallpaper. It’s just enough to show a statement but not so loud that it overpowers the space. Being able to pick the color is such a great thing also. You’re not stuck with 5 options so it can match your style and colors of your space. Would recommend to anyone looking for wallpaper. Very happy and my installer said its super easy to install this pattern.
