How to Wallpaper Newly Plastered Walls

How to Wallpaper Newly Plastered Walls

How long to wait, how to tell when plaster is genuinely dry, what to seal it with, and why sealing decides how easily the paper comes off years from now

Let the plaster dry completely, commonly two to four weeks for a skim over plasterboard, and six weeks or more for plaster applied to a solid wall, then seal it with a mist coat of watered-down emulsion or a wallpaper primer before you paper. Sealing stops fresh plaster drinking the paste out of the paper, and it means the wallpaper can be stripped later without pulling the plaster face off with it.

Getting this wrong is one of the most common and most expensive wallpapering mistakes, and the advice online genuinely conflicts. Here is what matters and why.

How long to wait

There is no single number, because it depends on the thickness of the plaster, what it was applied to, the time of year and how well the room is ventilated.

  • A skim coat over plasterboard: commonly two to four weeks.
  • Plaster on a solid masonry wall, or backing coat plus skim: six weeks or more, and longer in winter.
  • Any of it in a cold or unventilated room: longer again.

Ventilate the room and keep gentle background heat on. Do not accelerate it with a heat gun or a dehumidifier running hard against the wall, because plaster dried too fast can craze.

How to tell it is dry

  • Colour. Wet plaster is dark brown-pink. Dry plaster is a consistent pale, chalky pink all over.
  • Patches. Any darker areas mean moisture is still coming out. Corners, the bottom of walls and areas behind furniture dry last.
  • Touch. It should feel dry and slightly powdery, not cool and damp.

Wait for the whole wall to be one even colour. A wall that is 95% dry is not dry.

Why you have to seal it

Two reasons, and the second one is the one nobody mentions.

Porosity. New plaster is thirsty. Hang paper straight onto it and it pulls the water out of the adhesive before the paste has done its work, so the bond is weak and the seams lift.

Removal. Wallpaper paste applied to bare plaster bonds to the surface of the plaster itself. When somebody strips that paper, whether you in ten years or the next owner, it can bring the plaster face with it. A sealed wall gives the paste something to hold that is not the plaster.

Sealing with a mist coat

  1. Thin a matt emulsion with water, roughly 70% paint to 30% water, or as the tin instructs.
  2. Roll it on evenly over the whole wall and let it soak in.
  3. Let it dry fully. On very porous plaster a second thinned coat is worth doing.

Use ordinary matt emulsion, not a vinyl silk. If the wall is dark or bold underneath, this is also your chance to bring it back to a neutral base.

Or a wallpaper primer

A proprietary primer or sealer sold for preparing walls for wallpaper does the same job with less mixing. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for coverage and drying time.

What not to use

Avoid sealing with neat PVA. It leaves a glossy, non-porous film that paste struggles to bond to, and it can soften again when it meets wet adhesive. It is a common shortcut and it causes more lifting than it prevents.

New plasterboard that has not been skimmed

Fill and tape the joints, sand them flush, then seal the whole board, not just the joints, with a mist coat or primer.

The paper face of plasterboard bonds extremely well to wallpaper paste. Unsealed, removing the wallpaper later tears the board's face off, which is a repair job across a whole wall. This step takes an hour and saves a great deal.

Then wait again

Let the mist coat or primer cure before papering. If you have effectively repainted the wall, the thirty-day rule applies as it would to any new paint.

How long before you can wallpaper new plaster?

Two to four weeks for a skim on plasterboard, six weeks or more on a solid wall, and longer in winter. Judge it by even colour rather than by the calendar.

Do I need to seal new plaster before wallpapering?

Yes. A mist coat of watered-down matt emulsion or a wallpaper primer.

Can I use PVA to seal it?

We would not. Neat PVA leaves a film that paste does not grip well and that can soften when wet.

What happens if I paper straight onto bare plaster?

The plaster drinks the paste, so the bond is weak, and when the paper is eventually removed it can take the plaster face with it.

How do I know the plaster is dry?

It is a consistent pale pink all over with no darker patches, and feels dry and slightly chalky.

Can I speed it up?

Ventilate and keep gentle background heat on. Do not force it, because plaster dried too quickly crazes.

This wallpaper is just gorgeous! I used the one that requires glue and it was super easy to i stall. One roll was enough for a 6’ wide laundry closet with 7’5” ceilings. Even on our orange peel walls it set beautifully. I did this behind our new washer dryer set up in our laundry closet with white oak cabinets and it’s perfect! Highly recommend!

Truly love this wallpaper. Looks amazing in both our bathroom (the original project) and as an accent in the back of a cabinet (what we did with the extra). Everyone who sees it comments on how classy and beautiful it is. For these reasons five stars! However I do want to call out two concerns: 1. The online "calculator" on the site recommend nine roles, which seemed excessive for our less than 100 sq ft bathroom. I even reached out to support to double check and they said to go by the calculator. I'm glad I didn't because I ended up ordering five roles and only needing 4. I will say returning the 5th role was a pretty smooth process, so kudus to Claret and Key for that. 2. Strangely the "autumn" color with pale nutmeg background reads more green than brown in certain light. With bright overhead light it comes across as the soft brown we intended, but in natural light it reads much more green. Not anything to terrible just unexpected.

Customer photo review of Etta

Poor customer service - rolls are only available as one off 10m runs, so if you need 11m.. unfortunately you’ll be paying double for a second roll! Unless your walls are 8m or less, I’d avoid. Wrongly assumed Claret & Key would be slightly more compassionate about the situation and even help with a slightly discounted second roll, considering we only needed 1m. How wrong we were!

Etta

Store owner replied: Hi Emily, I'm sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the service. We sell our wallpaper by the roll, and we are unable to manufacture shorter rolls. This will be the same for most manufacturers as 10m rolls are standard, and most rooms require more than 1 roll to complete the job. Thanks, Claret & Key

I really loved this paper and thought it would look nice in my attic space. Delighted with the end result. Great service, excellent quality of paper and it really transforms the room. The eves are very low so the space was not utilised so making a feature with the wallpaper has created a cosy space to relax in. Thank you. M

Love this wallpaper. It’s just enough to show a statement but not so loud that it overpowers the space. Being able to pick the color is such a great thing also. You’re not stuck with 5 options so it can match your style and colors of your space. Would recommend to anyone looking for wallpaper. Very happy and my installer said its super easy to install this pattern.
